Sherri DodsworthLiving on Cape San Blas, America’s #1 beach, is great - we have sugar white sand, emerald green water, fabulous fresh seafood, wildlife all around, and even what we don’t have makes life good: no crowds, no traffic jams, no high rises, no crime. But since we have virtually no restaurants either, we’re into creating great meals at home for friends and neighbors.  I created this blog as a way for us to easily share our recipes with one another.

My favorite foods? Fresh caught scallops, raw Apalachicola oysters with an ice cold Heffeweizen, perfectly fried grouper, sushi, buttermilk fried chicken with garlic mashed potatoes, sticky sweet smoked baby back ribs, almost any dish with noodles (a passion for Ramen is my dirty little secret), gumbo, crab cakes, shrimp bisque.

    We ran across your blog and are coming to Cape San Blas from Tampa for a week in December. Obviously you know food and I was wondering if you have any local recommendations on where to buy seafood and where to eat oysters. Thanks!

    If you love seafood you’re going to love being here. First off: where to buy seafood. Easy: Seafood-2-Go is the best seafood market around with a good variety of fresh-off-the-boat choices, a number of prepared items (their smoked fish dips are totally addictive), plus they’ll pack items for travel. You’ll find it on Hwy. 98 just this side of the Apalachicola historic district.

    We have the greatest oysters in the world and there’s no better place to savor them than at the world famous Indian Pass Raw Bar. I grew up in Tampa and trust me - there’s no place anywhere near comparable there. The Raw Bar is severely local, casual, and a lot like walking into a time warp from the 40’s or 50’s. Raw oysters are fresh from the lagoon right across the street and yours for the taking at only $5.95 a dozen.

    Two great places in Port St. Joe to enjoy both seafood and fantastic views of St. Joe Bay are Sunset Coastal Grill and Dockside Cafe. At the Sunset, ask to be seated on the waterfront. Owner Patty Blaylock puts together new menus each week featuring fresh local fares.

    If you’re a serious foodie you have to daytrip over to Apalach at least once or twice during your stay for seafood at its finest. My fave? The Owl Cafe, fine, fresh, creative local fare presented beautifully and priced right. Check out the Boss Oyster on the Apalach riverfront where you’ll feel as if you’re dining inside a Florida postcard. The oysters are pricier here but if you like to sample a variety of toppings this is the place to go.
